Devanjalee Mitra is an Indian classical vocalist and a direct disciple of Pandit Jasraj through the traditional Guru-Shishya Parampara and Ganda Bandhan. Her journey in music began at the age of four under her first guru and mother, Vidushi Smt. Pratima Mitra. She later trained under Pandit Pratap Narayan, elder brother of Pandit Jasraj. With over 25 years of performance experience, Devanjalee has performed for audiences around the world. Her repertoire spans Hindustani classical and semi-classical music, ghazals featuring the poetry of celebrated Urdu poets such as Faiz Ahmed Faiz and Ahmad Faraz, timeless compositions by Mehdi Hassan, Ghulam Ali and Farida Khanum, and beloved Bollywood classics. She presents these musical traditions in an intimate and authentic Baithak style, creating an experience centered on listening, connection, and the timeless beauty of Indian music.

Career Highlights and Artistic Journey

Devanjalee's musical journey has included television, stage performances, playback singing and advertising jingles in India.

She was a winner of 'Geet Gaata Chal", a Zee TV singing reality show (1997), performed for Mumbai Doordarshan, and sang the title track for the stage production Taash Ke Patte featuring Kader Khan. Her work has also included playback and recording projects with composers and musicians from the Indian film and music industry.

Over the years, she has had the opportunity to perform in the presence of and share musical spaces with some of India's most celebrated artists, including Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Jagjit Singh, Zakir Hussain, Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia and Pandit Shivkumar Sharma.

These experiences shaped not only her musicianship, but also her belief that the most memorable performances are those that create a genuine connection between artist and audience.

A Musical Legacy

Music was part of Devanjalee's life long before she stepped onto a stage. Her mother, Vidushi Smt. Pratima Mitra, is an accomplished vocalist whose own musical journey brought her into the company of leading singers, composers and musicians of her generation. Growing up in this environment meant that music was never simply an extracurricular pursuit for Devanjalee. Riyaz, rehearsals, visiting musicians and conversations about music were part of everyday life. That early immersion, followed by her training in the Mewati Gharana, continues to shape the way she approaches both performance and teaching today.

Beyond the Stage

Alongside her musical career, Devanjalee built a successful corporate career spanning media, advertising and marketing in India and the US. She holds an MBA in Finance, an M.Com from the University of Mumbai and has studied Digital Marketing at New York University. Her career includes leadership roles at Disney-STAR TV, as well as experience with MullenLowe Lintas Group.

Finding Her Way Back to Music

For many years, academic and corporate commitments took her away from music, and performing became a distant part of her life. A recurring dream eventually awakened her desire to return to the stage. When she was diagnosed with cancer, music became a source of strength during chemotherapy. During her treatment in the US, she found comfort and a sense of healing through music. As her hair grew back, so did her determination to return to performing. The passion for music she had once put aside came back stronger than ever.

Music That Brings People Together

Today, known as devanjaleemitra across social media, she continues to share her love for Indian music and preserve the Baithak tradition. Devanjalee is based in the DMV area and performs Bollywood and Ghazal performances for private events, concerts, and cultural events across the US and worldwide. Her Baithaks bring together Ghazals, Retro Bollywood melodies, Raags, stories and audience interaction — creating evenings where guests don't simply listen to the music, but become part of the experience
